Seeking a Surrogate Cigarette Ignition Source

Since the early 1970s, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and otherrnprivate, independent organizations have used a standard cigarette, specified in thernCode of Federal Regulations (CFR) at 16 CFR 1632 to test the flammability ofrnmattresses, futons, and upholstered furniture. However, the production of the standardrncigarette could be affected when sales of less fire-prone cigarettes become mandatory,rnand the regulatory test method could be compromised. Due to this uncertainty and tornassure a continued level of fire safety, an option to develop a surrogate ignition sourcernthat is non-tobacco-fueled but with physical and thermal characteristics similar to therncurrent standard cigarette is being explored. This paper outlines the exploratory work tornassess the potential use of non-tobacco-fueled ignition sources for testing mattressesrnand upholstered furniture.
