To design apparel products that can meet the biomechanical needs of human body during wear, it is important to develop computing system for predicting the clothing dynamic mechanical behaviour by integrating mechanical models with computer technologies. In this paper, we report the development of a digital engineering design system on the basis of particle-based models to simulate clothing dynamical mechanical behavior. In this digital design system, the mechanical properties of clothing materials such as yarns and fabrics can be specified as input variables. This system has three major functional modules: pre-processing, solver and post-processing. In the pre-processing, the main functions include selecting and opening 2D patterns, defining and generating pattern meshes, defining the sewing seam lines and clothing material properties, and adjusting the pattern position with 3D human models. After completing these operations, a pre-processing file is created, which can be then imported into the Solver module to compute the dynamical mechanical deformation process of clothing. In this process, a number of parameters can be defined such as the density, elasticity and Poisson ratio, bending rigidity and shearing rigidity of the skin and fabrics. During the calculation, we can select different operation to illustrate the on-going calculating results such as deformations, skin pressures and stresses. After completing the computations, the post-processing can be used to visualize the calculation results for analysis and evaluation of the effects of style, fitness and material properties.
