摘要

The increase in population and sprawling of cities has resulted in an increase in vehicle ownership. This has caused higher rates of road accidents in developing countries as compared to developed countries. This paper presents the problems faced during the collection and dissemination of accident information through a case study conducted in Kota city, India. The basic problems discussed are the availability of total accident information at different sources (police records, insurance companies or individuals), the reporting of information in non-standardized accident formats and the absence of trained traffic police staff. Extra efforts were made for the collection of information and for extracting useful information from the unstandardised formats filled by untrained persons. The information was disseminated according to time phases, maneuvers, socioeconomic characteristics of persons involved, road condition or geometric and modes involved in accident on urban or rural roads.
