A Lightness Difference Formula for Predicting Crispening Effects

An early experiment was conducted to investigate the crispening effect in which lightness difference perception changes due to different lightness of backgrounds. Two media were used: paint samples and CRT stimuli. Each pair of samples was assessed against three and five neutral backgrounds for the paint and CRT experiments respectively. In this paper, the results were used to develop new lightness difference formulae, which takes into account of the lightness of a background.
