The buried depth of the heavy oil reservoirs in Xinjiang oil field is shallow, which means that there is a series of special technical problems in technical production with conventional horizontal well technology. For example, it is difficult to control the deflection law of the large sized drilling tools used in loose zones and to ensure the high build angle rate. Also, the complexities and risks will greatly increase under the conditions of limited total TVD, although it is good for production to use the casing program of a vertical wellhead and large sized completion strings. This paper is in accordance with the main technical problems of conventional horizontal well technology applied in the shallow heavy oil reservoirs of Xinjiang oil field and in cooperation with the horizontal well drilling in ultra -shal low heavy oil reservoirs drilled with a vertical drilling rig in Xinjiang heavy oil area in recent years. Furthermore, this study analysis the technology of drilling and completion for horizontal wells in ultra -shallow heavy oil reser voirs from the aspects of casing program and the optimal design of the well track, well trajectory controlling and the safe running of the large sized casing string. Based on the successful application of the heavy oil horizontal wells in Xinjiang oil field, the developed herringbone multilateral horizontal well and SAGD parallel horizontal well technol ogies are introduced, which provides a reference for the application in similar reservoirs.
