This paper demonstrates that extruded polypropylene, which is notoriously difficult to adhere to substrates, can be easily bonded when the melt is surface-oxidized with ozone and extruded on primed substrates. The effects of polypropylene type and ozone level were studied and the adhesion and moisture resistance evaluated. The surface of the polypropylene was stained by a new technique to measure the degree of oxidation by ozone. While the surface oxidation of polypropylene increases with ozone flux, the adhesion maximizes at intermediate ozone levels.
