The aim was to study possibilities to defiber American old corrugated container (AOCC) in high dry content. Dry defibering of OCC could offer interesting new possibilities especially if screening and cleaning, too, could be performed in high dry content. OCC was defibered using a pilot-scale hammermill. Various operating parameters and conditions were tested. Pulp properties were compared with wet disintegrated reference samples evaluating the strength properties of paper, fiber morphology and freeness. At best, fiber length remained near the reference but the strength properties were decreased. The results of the study suggest that dry defibering can be used to produce bulky material that has good drainage properties.
