Since the rebuild of two two-drum winders at UPM Kymmene, Rauma Finland in 1990, the belt bed winder has proven to be a reliable method of producing high quality rolls of grades ranging from coated board to newsprint, advancements in paper machine technology and the resultant increasing machine speeds have created strong challenges for single winder production lines. This paper will explore two recent winding advancements -Continuous Winding and the Sub-Floor Concept - that combine to extend the capabilities of the belt bed winder to meet and exceed these challenges. These developments are equally applicable for single and two drum winders. The sub-floor concept has been introduced to help reduce the noise level around the winder by repositioning the slitter section and drives below floor level. This new construction also improves moisture control of the web, shortens the winder in the machine direction and increases capacity. The concept of continuous winding has become achievable with advancements in automation hardware and control software. The process of continuous winding gives the winder the ability to continue to operate automatically, set after set, reel after reel as long as reels are available and the discharge area is clear, provided process checks are met and safety devices are not actuated. Manual tasks are substantially reduced thereby increasing the safety potential and reducing manpower or allowing one crew to operate two winders efficiently and safely. Recent results achieved with paper mill production winders will be discussed. These unique features have made the belt bed winder an effective winding tool for virtually all paper grades, and will also enable it to meet the challenges set forth by today's high speed paper machines. Multistation and two drum winders can also effectively take advantage of the sub-floor and continuous winding concepts.
