The behaviors of living systems are a function of four fundamental determinants:(1) the systems's structure and organization. (2) the system's capacity to direct energy, (3)avaliable energy, and (4) information. The basic characteristics of living systems are their reproductive nad metabolic behaviors. ANimals bave the additional characteristic of motile behaviors. The information determinant of these behaviors consists of three types (1) genetic, (2) biochemical, and (3) neural. These three types of information can be identified, determainded, and measured. Living systems generate, process, transmit, and receive these tpyes of information. reproductive behavior is caused by genetic information, metabolic behavior is caused by biochemical information, and the moule behaviors of animals are caused by neural information.
