The structure evolution during severe plastic deformation is linked with micro-localized flow inside shear bands. As morphology and orientation of shear bands are defined by macromechanics, the continual plasticity is used to analyze effects of deformation mode and history. From this standpoint, all possible strain states range from pure shear to simple shear and can be described by a single parameter. It is shown that simple shear conforms to the optimal deformation mode for early localization and development of spatial networks of high angle boundaries. This approach also clarifies a structure refinement mechanism under severe deformation processing.
