Identification of physical defects on as-cast slabs at Gary No. 2 cast lines and resolving the root cause of these defects requires systematic analyses using various techniques. Past cause and effect history must be referenced along with the "down and dirty" job of line climbing and eyeball inspection to accurately determine and confirm the suspected cause(s). Various measures such as sulfur prints, gap sled runs, hydraulic troubleshooting, alignment checks, portable flow meter devices, accelerometers, strain gauges, and other tools are utilized to help pinpoint the faulty component(s). Operating, maintenance and quality assurance personnel need to provide pertinent and accurate feedback to each other in order to correctly address the problem in the shortest amount of time. This presentation will deal with the "hands-on" practices we have developed over the years to rectify physical (non-chemistry) slab defects and protect the three cast lines from potential damage.
