Activating cathode conatings have been developed by ICI for use in membrane elecrolysers for the production of chlorine, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide. Two groups have been developed, based on precious mtal and nickel bases. Through appropiate design, the coatings display low overpotentials for hydrogen evolution, high durability, resistance to everse currents and tolerance to posions. Experinence gained in plant environments, over long time periods, confirms the laboratory performance.
