BP-treated polyurethane valves had more calcium deposits than untreated ones on contrary to expectation. Exact mechanism for this increase in calcification is currently being investigated. Nevertheless, both treated and untreated polyurethane valves had significantly less calcium deposits than tissue valves. Whether this can translate into more durable valves with less calcification than tissue valves is being investigated in animal studies.
