QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS SUGAR INDUSTRY (ISO 9001:2000 AND ISO 14001:1996)

Ponni Sugars (Erode) Ltd. (PEL) originally certified for ISO 9002:1994 has implemented transition program of ISO 9001:2000 and updated its Quality Management System (QMS). PEL also is the first sugar mtil in Tamil Nadu to implement Environmental Management System (EMS) as per ISO 14001:1996 standards. Det Norske Veritas (D.N.V.), the Netherlands, an Internationally renowned Certification body, has certified both the management systems. A common approach is made to present both systems together to avoid duplication. Identification of processes and/or aspects, establishment of policy with objectives, documentation, monitoring and measurement of process parameters and implementation of systems are discussed in detail in this paper. Both the management systems are compatible with each other and share common core processes like document control, resource management, internal audit, management review, corrective and preventive action. Results achieved after the implementation of management systems shows continual improvement in performance and benefits to the organization.
