With the aim of increasing the productivity of late planted sugarcane in the wheat-sugarcane cropping system, studies were carried out for two seasons at the experimental area of PAU Sugarcane Research Station, Ladhowal and for third season (2002-03) at the farmer's field in Kapurthala district. The experimental results revealed that sugarcane planted simultaneously alongwith wheat was the best way of achieving maximum productivity from wheat-sugarcane production system as it increased the yield of sugarcane substantially than sugarcane planted after harvesting wheat This simultaneous planting also gave maximum net returns and cost benefit ratio. Direct planting of sugarcane with no-tillage immediately after wheat harvest followed by irrigation or planting sugarcane in untilled of wheat field at proper soil moisture though produced cane yield statistically at par with the conventional method, yet these methods proved more economical due to low cost of sugarcane production on account of Zero tillage.
