In the paper the problem of optimal design of columns under loadings controlled simultaneously by displacements and forces is investigated. We look for a cross-sectional area varying along the axis of the column, which leads to the maximal axial displacement caused by compression before the structure buckles. The optimal solutions for the different modes of supports are presented in the paper.
