In summary, RRZ-DSS combines spatial data bases (GIS), hydrologic modeling and visualization to assist decision makers plan riparian zone restorations. The natural conditions of many riparian zones in the west have been damaged by overuse, grazing and farming. An objective of several organizations is to restore these zones to their pre-impacted conditions. Replanting is a major part of the restoration process. RRZ-DSS allows decision makers to easily see the impact of alternative planting patterns. The results are based on a physical description of the underlying groundwater and how it will change with changes to the surface system. Through an iterative process, decision-makers can develop planting patterns that will optimize their goals for the riparian zone. Future work will extend the model to MODFLOW format to improve its generality and modify the ET function to better represent the true physical relationship.
