In conclusion, the path to sustainability in high performance computing must start with solving the power limitation problem. To overcome this challenge, we need to take a holistic approach that utilizes process technology and circuit techniques, architectural techniques, and platform techniques including hardware and software co-design. Technology advances required to make exascale successful will trickle down to solving power limitations in mainstream devices such as handhelds. Going forward, we appeal to the semiconductor industry to be stewards of the planet by developing energy efficient technologies while minimizing their environmental footprint.
