The Jesse Preston Draper Building is the flagship green building on the Berea College Campus and the lead project in an ambitious campus-wide program to significantly reduce energy use, and transition from coal for power and heating to sources of renewable energy. A number of strategies, many of them user-controlled, were employed in this major building renovation to improve the building's performance. New central heating and cooling systems have been integrated with the building's structure, form and circulation; the building envelope was significantly upgraded with high performance windows, wall and roof insulation, and radiant barriers; an atrium at the building's center and more permeable interior facilitates stack- and cross-ventilation and improves daylighting; and high efficiency lighting reduces electricity use and cooling demand. Design models predict a 41% reduction in energy demand. The actual performance will likely depend on how effectively its users learn to operate, or sail, the building.
