HOOD RIVER COUNTY LIBRARY - A CASE STUDY OF A DESIGN PROCESS FOR NATURAL VENTILATION

In September 2003, a renovation and addition of the Hood River County Library was opened to the public in Hood River, Oregon. Cooling for the building is provided by a natural ventilation system, taking advantage of the consistent strong summer winds in the Columbia River Gorge. This paper describes the climate, the building design and the natural ventilation system. It also describes the design process used to define indoor comfort conditions, link comfort conditions to outdoor climatic conditions, design the natural ventilation system, and predict its performance. The paper discusses the relationship of the design process to the proposed revisions to ASHRAE Standard 55 "Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy" and offers the design process as a model for natural ventilation systems design.
