This paper describes a design method to make energy considerations an integral and influential part of the programming stage of design. Programming for complex buildings takes place before the architect is hired and is often done by a special consultant. The information contained in the program document becomes part of the architect's design brief. Conventional programming defines the building's spaces: what they are used for, how big they are, and their adjacency to each other. The method we have developed, energy zoning (or programming), adds climatic drivers of energy use and occupancy patterns to the conventional program's information. This paper describes the method, its architectural implications, and a completed project.
