THE JOHNSON HOUSE: TWENTY YEARS LATER

This paper examines a small, direct gain passive solar house in rural east-central Kansas that the author designed twenty years ago. The clients, who have continuously occupied the house since it was built in 1984, were interviewed by the author in the fall of 2003 to get their impressions of how well the house has performed. The house was featured in several popular publications and it received an AIA/KS Design Award in 1987. Its design was based on the vernacular model of the galleried French Colonial house type. Energy conscious strategies included high levels of insulation, considerable thermal mass, and high-performance glazing. The intent of this paper is to provide a "historical" record, as well as a "post-occupancy evaluation" of the performance of the house over time.
