This paper will compare water consumption across several categories for various passive and hybrid cooling strategies. A small office building located in Phoenix, Arizona was modeled to determine the water consumption for cooling strategies appropriate to a hot dry climate. Direct water consumption was determined by generating humidity ratios for wet-bulb depression bins that were adapted from TMY2 weather files for Phoenix. Indirect water consumption was determined from a recent NREL study of water use for U.S. power plants. An indirect water consumption value of 4.42 gals/kWh was chosen for use from this study. Direct plus indirect water consumption was summed and a Table was prepared highlighting the results of the comparison. Related concerns such as water and thermal quality for each of the cooling strategies are also presented.
