A GROWING NEED FOR CODE OFFICIAL TRAINING

One of the important findings of the Florida PV Buildings Program is the growing need for training building code officials. As an example, two nearly identical utility-interactive PV systems were installed within ten miles from one another. While close in proximity, they were subject to different building code guidelines. One system required little if any inspection, however the other required a significant amount of time to effort to get approval. While the inspection process for each home was very different, one thing was clear: the building inspectors knew very little about inspecting these systems. To help rectify this situation, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) has developed a one-day workshop to teach code officials how to properly inspect a utility-interactive PV system.
