Three-term seismic inversion volumes can define keyrnreservoir properties such as porosity and water saturation thatrntogether define the hydrocarbon pore volume. The problem isrnthat the vertical resolution of the elastic data is limited to, atrnbest, approximately 10 m. That means the inversion volumesrnactually represent elastic properties of a net-to-gross (N/G)rnwith unknown porosity and saturation in the net.rnThe binary decomposition is described by a model thatrnshows how the elastic data can be decomposed into thernproperties of the reservoir rock, typically sand, and propertiesrnof the non-reservoir rock, typically shale. Given a productionrnscenario, the recoverable hydrocarbon volumes can bernestimated directly from the seismic traces through the processrnof inversion, creation of support data, binary decomposition,rnhydrocarbon pore volume estimation, and seismic tracernvolume sampling.
