The constant rotating motion of the orbital shaker did not allow the cells to settle on the culture surface and discouraged cell-surface attachment. The subsequent collisions between the cells allowed the cells to form multi-cellular spheroids. For the H35 cells cultured in static configuration, coated surfaces allowed spheroids to remain attached but still remain mobile, so that larger spheroids could form through spheroid merging. No significant differences were found in the normalized urea production of all static H35 cell cultures. In all cases, the normalized urea production over the 72-h period was higher in case of suspension cultures compared to that in static cultures, relaying that the urea production was higher for suspension culture configurations where spheroids formed early.
