HILTI POWDER ACTUATED TOOL TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS IN US UNDERGROUND GASSY MINES

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates.
