SYMPOSIUM ON ENVIRONMENT Environmental Issues in the Cane Sugar Industry

Environmental awareness and the need for profits are oftentimes two issues at odds in the sugar industry. The higher cost associated with pollution abatement is normally not offset by higher yields. Only with the proper balance between these two issues is a long-term successful sugar operation possible. In this paper, the major environmental issues concerning water, air and soil are discussed in light of their impact on sugarcane production and raw sugar processing.
