The choice of the True Quality standard has revitalised Manildra Harwood Sugars' view and approach to quality and the quality system. While the system still needs to be managed, it has ensured that the focus remains on the product and the process. This has directly led to a dramatic reduction in product faults and customer complaints. The relationship with our major customers has also improved as a result. Adoption of a HACCP based quality system has provided them with considerable reassurance. The fact remains that the sugar industry has a relatively small number of members, both at an international and national level. In this instance, ISO is not a prerequisite to doing business, nor is it essential to remain in business. Provided the system chosen is strong, flexible and focused in the right direction, the risks of failure will be reduced. It can be used to identify problems within a process, reduce costs and increase production efficiencies. This of course makes us more competitive in the market place and this should always be the ultimate aim of a quality system.
