A field test was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a seed culture of petroleum degrading bacteria on enhancing biodegradation of the heavy oil spilt on the shore by an accident of a tanker in the Sea of Japan in January 1997. In this study, we developed a new method to quantitatively evaluate the impact of a bioremediation agent treatment on the oil resulting from the oil spill that had coated the hard substrates on the shore, such as rocks and concrete. This method uses a technique of digital photographic image analysis with a personal computer with a procedure. The results of the analysis detail, both visually and graphically, the quantitative changes of the oil on the rock surfaces relative to controls. The results of the field test clearly show that the bioremediation agent with mircrobiological cultures is able to significantly enhance the biodegradation of oil in the field.
