The patented PHOSter?Enhanced Bioremediation Technology has been applied to petroleum contaminated sites. With this innovative system, gaseous oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus are injected through wells, which stimulates naturally occurring microorganisms to rapidly remediate soil and groundwater. Two case studies are presented (1) Post-remediation monitoring: This project is conducted for the State of South Carolina and involves petroleum-contaminated soil and groundwater at the former Rocket Service Station, Abbeville, SC. After fifteen months of treatment, concentrations of all contaminants in all wells were reported at or below Site Specific Target Levels. (2) Active remediation: This project is conducted for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southern Division, North Charleston, SC, and is a petroleum contaminated site at an operating gas station located on the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL. A retrofit was provided to the existing dewatering/soil vapor extraction system, which had proved to be ineffectual. An innovative "Pay-for-Performance" contract approach was used for both projects. Payment is made upon reaching target levels of treatment as specified in contract documents. Combining the two innovative aspects of these projects, technology and contracting, allows for site remediation at lower cost, in less time, and with lower risk than conventional remediation technologies.
