Synthetic pyrethroids (SP) present in sheep dips were investigated in a series of cultures with previously isolated SP degrading bacteria. The experiments focused on the effect of culture temperature and presence of additional nutrients on bacterial cell growth and concomitant break down of SP. The goal was to begin to find a practical approach using biodegradation as a means of SP disposal in formulated insecticides. Results suggest that the addition of nutrients and more preferable growth substrates may increase the rate of SP degradation, and that temperature has a much lesser affect on the rate of break down per se. However, at low temperatures the cell growth was smallest and thus the degradation per cell was greatest.
