A full-scale demonstration in-situ bioremediation of dissolved methl-tert-butyl-ether (MTBE) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) was successfully completed in 2000 at the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Support Center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The goal of the project was to enhance the natural biodegradation of dissolved petroleum constituents without interfering with facility operations. The project goal was achieved by aquifer oxygenation which enhances natural bioremediation rates. Aquifer oxygenation was accomplished by injecting Oxygen Release Compound (ORC) into both the source and dissolved plume areas. Post-treatment monitoring of the aquifer indicated a substantial decrease in dissolved MTBE and BTEX concentrations. The dissolved MTBE mass was reduced 100% in both the source and plume areas. The dissolved BTEX mass was reduced 99% in the source area, and 53% in the plume area following oxygenation of the aquifer. Current monitoring efforts verify that bioremediation is occurring at a rate that is sufficient to protect down gradient receptors. Site closure has been obtained from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Management.
