In order to meet their goal of site closure by 2006, the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site must stabilize and dispose over 100 metric tons of plutonium-containing residues left over from weapons production operations. In this paper, we describe the development of a tomographic gamma scanner (TGS) to assist in meeting this goal. TGS provides high-throughput measurements of plutonium residues and transuranic (TRU) waste with accuracy and precision sufficient to meet safeguards, shipping, and disposal requirements. An overview of the development, implementation, and commercialization of this new instrument is presented.
