Modeling of sub-aerial tailings deposition and optimum deposition design in arid regions

Mineral and energy production produces large volumes of tailings. Most tailings are disposed of on the earth surface. How to minimize the environmental impact and reduce the storage volume of the tailings has become a major concern of mining operations. In addition, the pressure on the optimal use of water resources especially in arid regions is a critical issue. Therefore, how to maximize recycling of the processing water is an important concern in these regions. The sub-aerial deposition technique is a promising method for dealing with these problems. In this paper, the criterion for the optimum deposition is presented. A one-dimensional model of the sedimentation, consolidation and desiccation of subaerially deposited tailings is described. Desiccation cracks are incorporated in the design model which is applied to simulate the sub-aerial deposition of two typical tailings. The modeling results are presented and discussed.
