An approach to the environmental baseline chart in Argentina

This paper deals about the environmental baseline status in Argentina at the present times. The global characterization of the environment is a first step in quantifying impacts on nature that should be produced by a mining project. The quantitative characterization of environmental resources and targets which may be influenced by the focused activity is an important stage that perhaps takes a long period of time according to the knowledge of environmental database. Although the nation has an important tradition in the field of natural sciences, the data are not organized regarding environmental aspects. The environmental baseline have been performed only in few mining projects. In order to mitigate this deep lack of knowledge the National Geological Service is developing since 1997 the program named Environmental Baseline Chart of Argentine Republic (scale 1:250.000). The program addresses the different thematic items that must be taken in account. Mains are Lithology, Geomorphology, Soils, Climate, Superficial hydrology, Vegetation and use of the land and Natural and cultural patrimony.
