Sediment re-suspension in shallow water covers is an important problem in mine waste management, where shallow ponds are used to store tailings. In the present study, a wind-wave tank is used to investigate the resuspension process using both inert materials (glass beads) and actual mine tailings. The wind speed above the tank is monitored using a hot wire and the wave height using a wave meter. The wind induced motion and sediment concentrations in the water are measured using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Experiments have been conducted to determine sediment resuspension for the following conditions: water depth ranging from 6.35 cm to 11.43 cm; wind speed ranging from 5 m/s up to 15 m/s. Attempts are made to correlate the sediment concentration with wind speed and water depth.
