The long history of development of magnetic levitation throughout the world has been described as a "prolonged adolescence." In spite of decades of development, no high speed system has been built. The TRACBUS concept is a way of breaking the logjam by making it possible to develop a high speed ground transportation system incrementally, while avoiding the technological limitations of simply adding more and better rails or highways. The initial capital cost can be significantly lower than that for alternative concepts since the system would be more fully integrated with our existing highway network. Airport access, or connecting metropolitan airports to smaller regional airports, would be good candidates for initial application. The proposed guideway could be used by truck trains between the hours of midnight and 6AM. Driver productivity would be increased over that for ordinary trucks in proportion to the length of the train. This would have significant safety benefits.
