Energy dissipation devices require a material that exhibits a significant hysteretic effect without loosing stiffness at low strains. It is also desirable that the device maintains optimal damping properties for increased levels of stress and strain as due to the earthquake excitation. The adoption of the shape memory alloys (SMA) is investigated.
