The equations of motion of a structure with piezoelectric parts are here determined following a Lagrangian approach to evidence the reversibility of the interaction between mechanical and elecrical degrees of freedom. The reversibility is clearly shown in the coupling between mechanical and electrical dynamic equations. Two different possibilities of self-sensing layouts are then analyzed both theoretically and experimentally showing a good correlation. The results are interpreted in terms of pole-zero patterns typical of colocated sensor-actuator pairs. The stability of the proportional output feedback is analyzed in the cases of ideal and real power amplifier.
