Abstract: To enhance safety and expedite aircraft traffic controlat airports, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)is in the process of developing automation aids forcontrollers and pilots. These automation improvementsdepend on reliable surveillance of the airport traffic,in the form of computerized target reports for allaircraft. One means of surveillance of the airport isprimary radar. A short range radar of this type iscalled airport surface detection equipment or (ASDE).Lincoln Laboratory is participating in this developmentprogram by testing a system of surveillance andautomation aids at Logan International Airport inBoston, Mass. This work is sponsored by the FAA. Thispaper describes the radar equipment being used forsurface surveillance at Logan Airport and thecharacteristics of the radar images it produces.Techniques for automatic tracking of this radar dataare also described along with a summary of the trackingperformance that has been achieved. Two companionpapers in this session relate to this same radarsurveillance and provide more in-depth descriptions ofthe radar processing. !3
