Gitaru Unit No. 1-80 MW in three years

In October 1996 Mott MacDonald wih Knight Piesold were appointed by the Kenya Electricity Generating company Ltd (KenGen) to engineer the installation of the third and final unit (Unit 1) within the Gitaru power station situated on the Tana River approximately 160 km north east of Nairobi. The first two units at Gitaru were commissioned in 1978 and at that time it was expected that the third machine would follow after two or three years. However, it was not until 1996 that KenGen decided to proceed with implementation as it was decided that this machine was the most cost-effective means of quickly overcoming a lack of generating capacity.
