The Apocalypse of Chinese Traditional Practices of Agriculture on the Sustainable Development of Agriculture

Agriculture in china has a long history. China is one of the original places of agriculture in thernworld. Because of the high population, low resources per capita, high demand for agriculturalrnproducts, there is a big challenge for the sustainable development of Chinese agriculture, which is onrnthe middle of industrialization. Agricultural experience accumulated in the past several thousandrnyears may have a lot of “gold mind” which are worthwhile for us to discover. In the years of nornchemical fertilizer, methods like internal cycling, organic material collection, green manurernproduction, cropping system design, were used. These practices resulted in renewable soil fertilityrnunder continue cropping system. In the years of no chemical pesticides, methods like cleaning uprnreproduction area, introduction of natural enemies, physical methods, plant traps and plantrnmaterials, were adopted. It successfully reduced the damage caused by pests. Traditional philosophyrnformed in the agricultural society refracted the practices at that time. It emphasizes the harmony ofrnheaven, earth and human. It also pays attention to the coordination of our action with therncharacteristic of the special season, the places, and the objects in question. Ancient people also knewrnhow to protect wild life and plant communities from distinction. They created systems to combinerncrops with animals, crops with fishes, and crops with trees. In order to reduce chemical input andrnlooking for sustainable development, it would be very meaningful to combine our traditionalrnthoughts and practices with modern science and technology.
