Collaborative design is a significant feature for multidisciplinary product design. The key to collaborative design is the sufficient information- sharing of product model. STEP and CORBA are the major supporting technology for integrating heterogeneous systems for multidisciplinary product design. Current frameworks based on STEP and CORBA reveal weaknesses in various areas, such as information-sharing, components interop-eration, and developer productivity. Spaceflight product is a typical multidisciplinary product across the boundary of mechanics, electronics, control and software engineering domains. An attempt has been made in this paper to review a case of spaceflight product on collaborative design with the objective to: 1) analyze the main issues in the current computer integration systems for multidisciplinary product design and propose a To-Be paradigm of collaborative design. 2) introduce meta schema-based collaborative design which covers three core technologies: independence of product data from their processing technologies such as programming languages and operating systems; Description and exchange of product data on Internet; Meta framework with the functions of data transfer between XML document and database, and self-adapted component generation. 3) study the concepts related to meta scheme, including design pattern, metadata, meta language and meta framework. 4) explore a meta schema-based collaborative design solution of spaceflight product development. 5) discuss the further studies on meta schema-based collaborative design.
