Noncircular turning process is generally regarded as an important manufacturing technology for workpieces in noncircular profiles with high productivity, flexibility and quality. This paper focuses on analysis and enhancement of profile precision in noncircular turning process, and presents a number of different enhancement approaches. It is proposed that both optimized control strategies for the linear servo unit and an innovative scheme of variable spindle speed noncircular turning process are more potential for enhancement of noncircular profile precision. Then, three control strategies including the linear optimization tracking control, the nonlinear servo tracking control and the error compensation control are investigated respectively. In addition, both the mechanism of increasing machining stability and technical challenges of variable spindle speed noncircular turning process are presented.
