Service companies' competitiveness becomes increasingly problematic in a global economy. Banks and financial services are not exempt from this pressure and must find methods enabling them to proactively respond to a changing competitive landscape that includes new Internet business models, the convergence of banking, insurance, and securities business, and increasing mergers and acquisitions. The change in business focus requires that banks become "knowledge-oriented" organizations, where knowledge becomes a source of innovation, customer satisfaction and loyalty as well as a competitive advantage.
