Purpose : To prepare and evaluate Chitosan-Poly (Acrylic Acid) Interpolymer Complex (CS-PAA) as polymeric osmogents for controlled porosity and pushpull osmotic pump tablets.; Methods : The interpolymer complexes were prepared with different weight ratios of chitosan (CS) to Poly(Acrylic Acid) (PAA). The complexes were characterized and evaluated for their swelling characteristics. For simple pushpull osmotic pump tablets (PPOP), bilayered tablets with the drug layer containing felodipine and polyethylene oxide and the polymeric expansion layer containing CS-PAA were prepared. The cellulose acetate coated tablets were drilled on the drug side. The modified CPOP-PPOP propranolol tablets were prepared using PVP K30 as pore formers instead of a single orifice. CS-PAA were incorporated in both the drug and polymer layers. The drug release characteristics were determined.; Results : CS-PAA exhibited a great deal of swelling and exerted swelling force to push the drugs through the openings. The release profiles in any cases were found to follow zero order kinetics. Mechanisms of drug release depended on type of osmotic pumps.; Conclusions : CS-PAA was proved to be a promising polymeric osmogents for swellable osmotic systems.
