In the frame of the French Space Operations ActrnCNES’s objective is to ensure that the technical risksrnassociated with space activities are properly mitigated.rnCNES provides technical expertise to Frenchrngovernment and will check compliance with technicalrnregulation before authorisation by the ministry inrncharge of space activities. CNES is developing andrnproposing the technical methods to be recommended torncope with the law requirements. A work was performedrnto establish a method to evaluate the impact ofrnatmospheric re-entry of orbital systems (satellites) onrnhuman health and environment. This re-entry can haverndifferent causes: it is linked to a launch or satelliternfailure, or it is a normal end-of-life. Based on thernsimulation of satellite parts, which are supposed tornsurvive to an atmospheric re-entry, the method aims atrnestimating materials likely to induce human health orrnenvironmental impacts. At the 5th IAASS, the hazardrnestimation method was presented, based on a toxicityrn“ratio” calculated. Then, the level of risk has to bernanalyzed. The exposition was evaluated taking intornaccount the different environmental compartments. Inrnthe paper, the hypotheses and the method used for riskrnevaluation will be developed.
