This paper discusses some of the lessons learned during the application of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to a new offshore gas platform design for the South China Sea. Since production availability was critical, the project employed the necessary tools that would assist with meeting production targets. Gas production availability is largely dependent upon the reliability and maintainability of equipment, which in turn is influenced by human operational and maintenance activities. For this reason, it was important to incorporate HFE specialists as a part of the design team. In order to optimize the benefits from HFE, it was necessary to look at the unique characteristics of the expected user population of the facility to ensure that the design reflected their expected physical, psychlogical and cultural attributes.
