A pilot test study was carried out on two reinforced concrete beams (220 mm x 330 mm x 3 m long) in order to investigate the effect of using steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) to improve development and lap splice length of deformed reinforcing steel bars. Both beams used high strength concrete having a compressive cylinder strength of 80 MPa, one with 40 kg/m~3 of steel fibres added to the concrete and the other using plain concrete without any stirrups along the lap splice length. Test results show an improvement in bond strength that occurs because of a reduction in bar stress and additional transverse confinement that both result from the increased post-cracking resistance provided by the SFRC. Recommendations are given for code implementation.
